Warriors ELI5: Why is an Agility Ring preferred over a Strength Ring

WOW WoTLK Classic Nov-28-2023

Let's break it down without resorting to "Sim it," which I've already done.

Both rings have equivalent Hit, Crit, Socket, and an Attack Power proc. Here's the difference:

Agility Ring:

    88 Agility

    135 Attack Power

Equivalent to approximately 70 Crit Rating

Provides armor, resulting in around +4 Attack Power

Strength Ring:

    99 Strength

    23 Stamina

    Provides 198 Attack Power

    Offers a bit of Stamina

According to the stat weights on sim, 70 Crit is equivalent to around ~148 Attack Power. So, is the Crit worth sacrificing the -60ish Attack Power? The sim's stat weights suggest that the Agility ring is significantly better. If you want both rings, you need to have plenty of WoTLK Classic gold.

However, there might be skepticism about this conclusion. Personal testing could yield different results, potentially influenced by RNG or overlooked factors.

To understand why people say "sim it," it's essential to grasp that, historically, assigning a value to each stat and comparing items based on this unified value system was the norm. However, this approach had limitations because the value of stats depends on your current stats. As you get more Attack Power, for instance, its value changes.

Moreover, interactions with abilities and cooldowns complicate the assessment of stat values. For example, comparing two rings, one with Strength and one with Agility, becomes challenging when trying to understand their contributions to total damage over a 3-minute fight.

When you hear about "sim stat weights," it's a more sophisticated version of the changing "stat values." The simulation calculates how an extra point of a stat affects the DPS calculation in a specific gear set. While stat weights are handy for quick assessments, they may not capture the complexity of every in-game scenario.
