How to Beat Mohg in Elden Ring

Defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood, is one of the most significant challenges in Elden Ring. This optional demigod is not only a shardbearer but also a gateway to the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. This guide provides a comprehensive strategy to overcome his brutal bloodflame attacks and Elden Ring Runes emerge victorious.

Who is Mohg and Where to Find Him

Mohg, Lord of Blood, is an optional demigod boss who resides in the Mohgwyn Palace, an underground region accessible via a portal in the Consecrated Snowfield or by completing White-Faced Varre's questline to obtain the Pureblood Knight's Medal. He should not be confused with the easier, non-shardbearer version, Mohg, the Omen, found in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds beneath Leyndell.

Defeating him is a key requirement for accessing the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. You will be rewarded with 420,000 Runes, Mohg's Great Rune, and the Remembrance of the Blood Lord upon his defeat.

Essential Preparations Before the Fight

Proper preparation is paramount for this fight. It is highly recommended to be at least Level 120.

Crucial Items: Two items are incredibly useful for this fight.

Purifying Crystal Tear: Add this to your Wondrous Physick. When consumed, it creates a protective shield that negates the damage from Mohg's "Nihil" blood curse during his phase transition. You can get it by defeating Eleonora, Violet Bloody Finger, at the Second Church of Marika on the Altus Plateau.

Mohg's Shackle: This item, found in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds guarded by giant lobsters, allows you to temporarily stun Mohg twice during the first phase, giving you a wide window to attack. It does not work in the second phase.

Defensive Gear: Equip talismans that boost your physical defense and non-physical damage negation, such as the Dragoncreast Shield Talisman and the Pearldrake Talisman. Since Mohg inflicts Hemorrhage, gear and consumables that boost Robustness are also valuable.

Spirit Ash Summons: A tanky Spirit Ash like Mimic Tear or Lhutel the Headless can draw Mohg's aggro, giving you crucial moments to heal, rebuff, or attack safely.

Phase 1: Strategy and Attack Patterns

The first phase is your opportunity to deal as much damage as possible before the fight intensifies.

Opening Moves: Use Mohg's Shackle near the start of the fight and again when he is around 60-70% health to stun him. Unleash your most powerful attacks during these windows.

The Blood Curse: Throughout the phase, Mohg will chant "Tres, Duo, Unus" at certain health thresholds, placing red rings on your character. Don't panic—these don't damage you yet.

Key Attack Patterns to Punish:

Overhead Slam & Thrust: These are his most punishable moves. Dodge forward as the attack lands to get behind him and land 1-2 hits.

Blood Rain: When he reaches into a portal above his head and holds it, he is summoning a rain of blood. You can safely land a hit from behind before backing away from the damage area.

Melee Combos: Mohg's trident combos are often three hits long. Never get greedy; wait for the full combo to finish before punishing.

Claw Explosion: A quick swipe of his hand is followed by a delayed explosion. Roll backwards to avoid the blast.

Phase 2: Surviving the Transition and New Threats

When Mohg's health reaches around 60%, he will trigger his phase transition.

Surviving "Nihil": He will shout "Nihil!" three times. Each shout will trigger a blood loss explosion on you, dealing massive damage and healing him. Drink your Wondrous Physick with the Purifying Crystal Tear just before he starts chanting to completely negate this attack's damage. If you don't have the tear, you must heal between each "Nihil" shout.

New and Enhanced Attacks: In this phase, Mohg grows wings and his attacks are infused with bloodflame, increasing their range and adding bleed buildup.

Flying Blood Spray: He flies up and sprays blood over a wide area. Dodge forward to close the distance as he follows up with a downward slash.

Enhanced Thrusts: His thrusting attacks now have a second hit or a small area-of-effect burst. Be prepared to dodge twice.

Bloodflame Everywhere: The entire arena floor will be coated in burning blood, causing constant bleed buildup. Keep moving and manage your position carefully.

Advanced Tactics and Weaknesses

Understanding Mohg's vulnerabilities can turn the tide in your favor.

Exploiting Weaknesses: Despite being the Lord of Blood, Mohg is susceptible to the Hemorrhage and Scarlet Rot status effects. Fast weapons like katanas or curved swords buffed with Bloodflame Blade or Blood Grease can quickly trigger bleed. Spells like Rotten Breath are also highly effective.

Aggressive Burst Strategy: With high enough damage, it is possible to "skip" the second phase entirely. Use Mohg's Shackle and all your damage buffs to burst him down from 60% health before he can finish his transition.

Patience is Key: For melee builds, the strategy remains the same as Phase 1 but requires more patience. Bait out his overhead slams and thrusts, punish with one or two attacks, then immediately disengage. Let your Spirit Ash summon take the brunt of his aggressive assaults.

By methodically preparing with the right tools, learning his attack patterns, and buy Elden Ring Runes exploiting his weaknesses, you can conquer the Lord of Blood and claim your rightful rewards.
